Design considerations of photonic lanterns for diffraction-limited spectrometry

The coupling of large telescopes to astronomical instruments has historically been challenging due the tension between instrument throughput and stability. Light from telescope can either be injected wholesale into instrument, maintaining high at cost point-spread function (PSF) stability, or time-varying components light filtered out with single-mode fibers (SMFs), stability loss. Today, field astrophotonics provides a potential resolution throughput-stability in form photonic lantern (PL): tapered waveguide which couple aberrated PSF multiple diffraction-limited beams an efficiency that greatly surpasses direct SMF injection. As result, lantern-fed retain SMF-fed while increasing their throughput. To this end, we present series numerical simulations characterizing PL performance as geometry, wavelength, wavefront error (WFE), aimed guiding design future spectrometers. These characterizations include first look interaction PLs phase-induced amplitude apodization (PIAA) optics.
